An introduction to traditional rug hooking

You will learn how to draw a pattern, color plan this design and the basics of how to hook a traditional rug. This is a small group class, with plenty of one-on-one help to get you started on a project for the winter months ahead.

Cost for the class: $25

Cost for supplies for the class: $50

Supplies includes: backing and wool for an 8” x 8” finished rug. 

Students are not required to purchase supplies but can bring their own. Call Diana for details on what to bring.  Hooks and frames will be available for use during the class and for sale at the end of class.

Diana is a 3^rd generation rug maker, raised in Cumberland, MD and living in Baltimore, MD.  She is the president of the local chapter of ATHA (Association of Traditional Hooking Artists)  You can find her work for sale at Mountain City, Frostburg or in Baltimore at Sideshow in the American Visionary Art Museum.

Irish Traditional Music on Uilleann Pipes & Fiddle

London-born uilleann piper Emmett Gill and American ex-pat fiddler Jesse Smith have formed a virtuosic Galway-based duo devoted to hard-core Irish traditional music in a style that recalls the energetic sound of Irish recording artists of the 1920s.  Their recently issued duo CD, The Rookery, features arepertoire of familiar and obscure tunes sourced from classic manuscript collections as well as recordings by trad heroes who include pipers Seamus Ennis, Willie Clancy and Leo Rowsome and fiddlers Bobby Casey, James Morrison and Padraig O'Keeffe.

Todd Burge's songs are mostly stories that inhabit his invented characters. The scat singing and lyrical humor lighten the mood of some heavy subjects, letting his insights sneak up on you. Burge, has played everything from Alternative/Punk Rock to Bluegrass, performing in venues as diverse as CBGB’s with his band 63 Eyes, to the The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Kennedy Center.  He is a repeat guest on NPR's Mountain Stage and has been called the “dean of WV songwriters”, by the show’s host, Larry Groce.  Burge has performed and toured with Tim O’Brien, Kathy Mattea, Lucinda Williams, Bela Fleck, Mike 
 Seeger, Larry Groce, Ricky Skaggs and many others. 

ANTIQUE BASKETS ROADSHOW APPRAISAL AND PANEL DISCUSSION

Researched by FSU Folklore in Appalachia students, this event highlights basketry traditions in Western Maryland, providing participants with a free expert basket evaluation. Mr. James W. McCrobie, the last of six generations of basket makers, joins us for that day as the expert in McCrobie baskets. So, bring out your baskets and basket-making stories/ histories from attics and basements and join us.
